PROFHILO® is the latest generation in hyaluronic acid (HA) based injectable technology to treat skin laxity, based on Hydrolift® Action, lifting and tightening the skin by natural stimulation.

Referred to as a BDDE-free, injectable hyaluronic acid product, it isn’t a dermal filler or mesotherapy solution (biorevitaliser). It is a true tissue-stimulating, bio-remodelling injectable product, not a line filler.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our skin, which our bodies produce daily to keep the skin hydrated, like a natural moisturiser. It does this like a sponge as it attracts water to the tissues, resulting in the plumpness which we associate with healthy, youthful skin. As we age, we simply don’t produce as much natural HA daily and our skin struggles to stay in optimum condition, becoming dry and dehydrated, leading to a loss of elasticity and ultimately laxity or tissue sagging and wrinkling.

PROFHILO consists of highly-concentrated, ultrapure hyaluronic acid, including both high (H-HA) and low (L-HA) molecular weight HA, which is stabilised through thermal methods, meaning there is no chemical cross-linking, as is common place with most HA-based dermal filler products. This means that it causes a reduced inflammatory reaction in most people.

The ultrapure grade of HA is produced through a patented biofermentation process and is non-animal in nature. PROFHILO results in stabilised, hybrid, cooperative complexes of hyaluronic acid which is developed with the manufacturer’s NAHYCO® hybrid technology using fluctuations of heat in the production process. It also has one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid in an injectable product.
With the use of the both H-HA and L-HA the product can work on multi-levels to remodel the cells and components which make up the layers of skin tissue, helping them at the extracellular matrix, the front-line of cell management. This means that it promotes and supports remodelling through stimulation of the body’s own cells to increase their production of new collagen and elastin, stimulating four different types of collagen in fact, which sets it apart from dermal fillers.

PROFHILO can be used to remodel tissue and improve skin laxity in the face, neck and body, including the hands and upper arms. Treatment is ideal for those with dull, dehydrated, ageing skin, which tends to happen after the age of 30.

Treatment is usually recommended over two sessions, spaced one month (4 weeks) apart. PROFHILO will be injected just below the surface of the skin, based on a prescribed technique. The nature of the substance means that it quickly disperses through the skin, unlike a filler gel which will usually stay locally to the injection site. This instantly boosts hydration in the tissues and will smooth fine lines and wrinkles, going on to improve the overall texture of the skin over the next month. As it creates limited volume, but hydrates tissue and increases elasticity, it is an ideal treatment for areas such as the neck, around the mouth or the hands, which can be tricky areas to treat with conventional dermal fillers. These areas benefit greatly from rehydration and longer-term tissue stimulation.

As it is not an instant filler but relies on stimulating the body to heal itself to produce the new tissue, results take a couple of months to establish. Depending on the individual and the condition of their skin, these results can last approximately six months, sometimes longer. We would usually recommend a repeat treatment to both maintain and add to your results at this point.

PROFHILO Questions

  • What is PROFHILO?

PROFHILO is manufactured by the Italian pharmaceutical company IBSA Farmaceutici.

Each pre-filled syringe of 2ml of PROFHILO contains a high concentration (64mg/2ml) of hyaluronic acid (HA), based on 32mg of high molecular weight HA (H-HA) and 32mg of low molecular weight HA (L-HA). This is thermally stabilised through a heating and cooling process (using NAHYCO® Hybrid Technology), meaning that no chemical cross-linking agents such as BDDE are required. This process produces the stabilised, hybrid cooperative complexes of hyaluronic acid which make the product easy to inject, easy to spread and manipulate in the tissue and less likely to cause an inflammatory response or reaction thanks to the lack of cross-linking chemicals.

PROFHILO is a bio-remodelling, tissue stimulating product, not a dermal filler or injectable mesotherapy biorevitalisation product.

  • How does PROFHILO work?

After injecting the PROFHILO into the skin, there is a slow release of the hyaluronic acid into the tissues due to the hybrid complexes. The HA lasts for approximately 28 days before the body has naturally metabolised it. During this time, and through the slow release mechanism, it gets to work stimulating the four different types of collagen and elastin needed to remodel the skin tissue. The four types of collagen are type I and type II collagen in fibroblast and type IV and VII collagen in keratinocytes. This results in significant improvement to skin structures, boosting the natural components and giving a lifting and tightening effect to the facial tissues.

Treatment works as a Hydrolift® Action, as the low molecular weight HA (L-HA) provides hydration to the epidermal layers of the skin – the Hydro effect. Whilst the high molecular weight HA (H-HA) creates a deeper scaffold or structure in the dermal tissues to volumise – the Lift effect.

PROFHILO also increases the production of the body’s own natural hyaluronic acid.

  • How is PROFHILO administered?

Treating the face with PROFHILO is performed using a 5-point technique referred to as the BAP (Bio Aesthetic Points) which involves injections in the upper cheek, lower cheek at the base of the nose, next to the ear, the chin and lower jawline. A single 2ml PROFHILO syringe is used in the face at each treatment session, 1ml per side of the face.

The neck can be treated through one injection point on each side of the neck and by using a fanning technique to place the PROFHILO across the whole side of the neck. Two 2ml PROFHILO syringes (4ml) are used in the neck at each treatment session, 2mls per side of the neck.

Hands can be treated in the same way, using a fanning technique through one injection point. Depending on the correction, one or two 2ml PROFHILO syringes are used in the hands at each treatment session, 1ml or 2mls per hand.

If you require it, a topical anaesthetic or numbing cream can be used on the skin before the injections are delivered, but most people find the treatment doesn’t cause much discomfort.

  • What parts of the face and body does PROFHILO treat?

PROFHILO can be used to treat skin laxity and improve skin condition and tone in the face, neck, hands and other areas of the body including the upper arms.

It is recommended for treating the upper and lower cheek areas, or lower third of the face, to reduce volume loss, skin sagging and jowling.

  • Are there any side effects?

All injectable treatments, including PROFHILO, carry some minor risks in relation to injecting the skin. These include bruising, redness or swelling at the injection points. Other potential side effects include allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid or infection, as well as vascular compromise or nerve damage because of the act of injecting. IBSA Farmaceutici note that instances of vascular or nerve damage are considered very rare.

  • Who should not have PROFHILO?

Anyone with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid is not suitable for PROFHILO treatment.

Women who are pregnant or breast feeding will be asked to wait until after this time before having this treatment.

  • What is the aftercare?

Aftercare instructions will be provided to you after your treatment session when you leave the clinic. This will include trying not to touch, rub or scratch the injection points to reduce the risk of causing an infection. Ideally, we would also recommend not wearing make-up for the first 12 hours after treatment, or longer if possible.

Treatment is well tolerated so you should not need pain medication after treatment, but you may take paracetamol if required.

You will be asked to avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise and taking aspirin for 24-48 hours after treatment. Going swimming or using hot tubs, jacuzzi, steam rooms and saunas should be avoided for two weeks following treatment, and ideally completely during the four weeks between your treatment sessions. You will be advised on the avoidance of sun exposure immediately following treatment and the best way to protect your skin from sun damage.

  • How long does it last?

Results can last up to six months or longer, depending on the individual and condition of their skin. You will be recommended on maintenance options for PROFHILO.

  • How much does it cost?

PROFHILO treatment for the face costs £500 for the two treatment sessions. Pricing for treatment to the neck or hands can be discussed and the price will be dependent on the amount of PROFHILO required to achieve a good result.
